Matthew C. Williams has been a licensed attorney in the State of Idaho since 2000. Matt’s primary practice areas are in criminal law, family law, and litigation and trial work. Matt joined Murray, Ziel, & Johnston in 2023.
Matt grew up in western Oregon but moved to Idaho for law school in 1997 and hasn’t looked back. He graduated from Western Oregon University where he majored in political science and made the baseball team. Matt graduated from the University of Idaho School of Law and was admitted to practice law in Idaho in October of 2000. While in law school Matt had the opportunity to handle both court trials and a jury trial, allowing him to gain valuable courtroom experience before graduating law school.
After graduation, Matt continued gaining trial and courtroom experience when he began working as the Valley County Chief Deputy Prosecuting Attorney in Cascade, Idaho, before leaving for a a short stint in private practice doing family law and criminal defense. In May of 2004 Matt ran and won the primary election for the Office of Valley County Prosecuting Attorney, and in November of 2004 he was elected as the Valley County Prosecuting Attorney. Matt took office early in August of 2004 after he was appointed by the Valley County Commissioners to fill the remainder of the term vacated by the previously elected prosecuting attorney. Matt won re-election in 2008 and served a total of 2 terms as the Valley County Prosecuting Attorney, leaving office in January 2013 to go back into private practice. In the fall of 2014 Matt made the move from Cascade to the Boise area, continuing to work in private practice.
Matt’s notable cases include:
-Representing a client wrongfully terminated chief of police from his job against the City of McCall, securing a jury verdict in his favor following a week long jury trial in federal court.
-Representing a client against Southwest Airlines and securing a very favorable mid six figure settlement.
-Representing a client against Bayer Pharmaceuticals after she suffered injury from a medication, receiving a favorable settlement.
-Representing a client who had her rights violated by the City of Middleton Police Department and achieving a favorable settlement on her behalf.
In addition to his duties as the Valley County Prosecuting Attorney, Cascade City Prosecuting Attorney, and McCall City Prosecuting Attorney, Matt remained involved in his community. Matt coached a variety of youth sports in Cascade, including T-ball, baseball, basketball, flag football, and soccer. Matt coached varsity football as the Assistant Head Coach for Cascade High School from 2003 until 2013. His coaching experience included winning the Idaho State 1A 8-man State Championship in 2003.
